Help & Support
Learn how Oweya works and get answers to common questions.
Why use Oweya when I can just call a friend?
Calling one friend puts all the pressure on one relationship. Oweya builds a community of people who are all committed to helping each other — not because they happen to be going your way, but because they want to. Points keep it fair automatically, so no one feels taken advantage of. No awkward "I owe you one." Just your community, looking out for each other.
How do oweya points work?
Every ride you give earns you oweya points based on distance. When you need a ride, points are deducted from your balance. You start at 0 and can go as low as −200 points, after which you will not be able to request rides until you give one. Points formula: • 0–10 mi: 3 pts/mi → 5 mi = (5×3) = 15 pts • 11–20 mi: 2 pts/mi → 15 mi = (10×3)+(5×2) = 40 pts • 21+ mi: 1 pt/mi → 30 mi = (10×3)+(10×2)+(10×1) = 60 pts
How are points calculated?
0–10 mi: 3 pts/mi. 11–20 mi: 2 pts/mi. 21+ mi: 1 pt/mi. • 5 mi = (5×3) = 15 pts • 15 mi = (10×3)+(5×2) = 40 pts • 30 mi = (10×3)+(10×2)+(10×1) = 60 pts
What is a network?
A network is a trusted group of people who exchange rides with each other. You can be part of up to 3 networks, either as an admin or by joining. Each network has an admin who manages membership.
How do I join a network?
Search for a network by first name, last name, or email on the Network page and send a join request. The network admin will approve or deny your request.
Can an admin remove me from a network?
Yes, but not without your consent. If an admin sends a removal request, you will be notified and can accept or decline. If you accept, you will be removed and your points for that network will also be lost.
What about my personal data?
Your name, nickname, email, and points are viewable by everyone in your network. No one except the two participants — the rider and the person offering the ride — can see the details of a specific ride.
How do I request a ride?
Go to Need a Ride and tap Request a Ride. Enter your pickup and dropoff address, date, and time. Members of your shared networks will see the request and can offer to drive.
How do I offer a ride?
Go to Offer a Ride to see open ride requests from people in your networks. Tap any request to view details and offer to drive.
What happens when a ride is completed?
The driver sends an approval request to the rider to approve the completion of the ride. Once approved by the rider, points are transferred automatically — deducted from the rider and added to the driver.
Can I cancel a ride?
As a rider, you can cancel at any time up until the ride is in progress. For the offeror, the options are slightly more constrained — they can only cancel up to 6 hours before the pickup time. Once the ride is in progress, reach out to your driver or rider directly if plans change.
What is a nickname?
Your nickname is an optional short name others see alongside your full name. Set it on your Profile page.
